Ukraine and Qatar Sign 10-Year Defence Pact Focusing on Drone and Missile Threats

Doha: Ukraine and Qatar have entered into a significant 10-year defence agreement, marking a strategic partnership aimed at countering missile and drone threats, the Qatari government announced. This pact comes amidst increasing aerial tensions in the Gulf region, particularly involving Iran.

According to France24.com, the agreement was part of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's diplomatic tour of Gulf nations, during which he also secured defence cooperation agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. These agreements follow retaliatory strikes by Iran in response to US-Israeli actions in the region.

Kyiv is leveraging its advanced expertise in drone technology, honed through its conflict with Russia, to assist Gulf nations in enhancing their air defence capabilities. Ukrainian anti-drone experts have been deployed to Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia as part of these agreements.

The Qatari defence ministry highlighted the agreement's focus on technological collaboration, joint investments, and shared expertise in countering missiles and unmanned aerial systems. Ukraine's burgeoning reputation as a drone manufacturing hub has attracted significant interest from the Middle East, as regional powers seek to bolster their defence against drone warfare.

During his visit, Zelensky emphasized the strategic nature of these agreements, indicating plans for co-production and the establishment of production lines both in Ukraine and the partner countries. The agreements are seen as mutually beneficial, with potential economic gains running into billions for Ukrainian exporters.

The Ukrainian leader also suggested potential exchanges of Ukrainian drone interceptors for the more expensive air-defence missiles currently used by Gulf countries. Such exchanges could enhance Ukraine's own defences against persistent Russian missile attacks.

Zelensky's tour and the resulting agreements underscore a shift in geopolitical dynamics, with Ukraine poised to play a pivotal role in strengthening Gulf defence capabilities. The partnerships reflect an evolving defence strategy that not only seeks assistance but also positions Ukraine as a key contributor to regional security.
