UN Envoy Criticizes US Sanctions Against Cuba During UN General Assembly Session

New york: Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has reiterated the Islamic Republic's firm opposition to economic, commercial, and financial sanctions imposed on independent countries, including US sanctions targeting Cuba. The ambassador made the remarks on Monday during the UN General Assembly's session titled 'Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial, and Financial Embargo Imposed by the United States of America Against Cuba.'

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iravani emphasized the detrimental impact of the US embargo on Cuba, highlighting that despite more than six decades of calls from the UN General Assembly and the international community, the United States has not only maintained its sanctions but has intensified them. These actions have led to severe consequences for the Cuban populace, including deteriorated living conditions, fuel shortages, disruptions in power generation, and restricted access to essential goods and services.

The ambassador's statement also underscored the broader implications of these sanctions, noting that they contravene the Charter of the United Nations and international law by threatening Cuba's sovereignty and right to self-determination. These policies, he argued, are an attempt to force Cuba into submission and interfere with its internal affairs.

Iravani called for the elimination of unilateral coercive measures, citing Iran's own experiences with military aggression as a testament to the need for consistent and impartial application of the UN Charter. He stressed the collective responsibility of the international community to oppose violations of the Charter's principles and to reject policies that compromise international peace and security.

In conclusion, the Islamic Republic of Iran reaffirmed its opposition to sanctions against sovereign states like Cuba and expressed its commitment to advocating for international cooperation and peaceful coexistence.
