Beirut: Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has criticized the United Nations for its failure to take any concrete action following Israel’s war of aggression against Iran in June, saying that the Security Council of the world body even failed to issue a statement condemning the aggression.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei made the remarks while speaking with reporters on Monday on the sidelines of a ceremony the Iranian Foreign Ministry held to mark the 80th anniversary of the UN. He stated that Iran was attacked by Israel and the United States without legitimate reason, highlighting the failure of the UN to act properly. Baqaei pointed out that the Security Council, influenced by the US, could not even issue a brief statement condemning the aggression during the 12-day war that began on June 13, during which the US joined Israel in bombing major Iranian nuclear sites.
Baqaei also criticized the UN for its inaction on other issues, including attempts by Britain, France, and Germany to reinstate previously lifted sanctions against Iran under the 2015 nuclear deal. He urged those supporting peace and international security to remain vigilant against violations of international rules and principles.
While acknowledging the UN’s successes through its specialized agencies and programs, Baqaei expressed concern over the Security Council’s effectiveness in maintaining international peace and security. He noted that the council’s ability to act is often hindered by the veto power of permanent members like the US and support from some European countries, as evidenced by its recent inaction regarding the ongoing situation in Gaza.
