UN Secretary-General Urges Israeli Regime to Cease Operations in South Lebanon

Naqoura: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an end to the Israeli regime's military operations and occupation in southern Lebanon, which persist nearly two months after a ceasefire was declared. Guterres made these remarks during a visit to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) headquarters in Naqoura, a town in southern Lebanon.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Guterres emphasized that the ongoing Israeli occupation and military activities in the UNIFIL area violate UN Security Council Resolution 1701. He highlighted that these actions pose significant risks to the safety and security of the forces stationed in the area, asserting that such activities "must stop." Resolution 1701 stipulates that only the Lebanese army and UNIFIL forces are authorized to operate in southern Lebanon.

Guterres' visit is strategically timed ahead of the January 26 deadline for the full implementation of the November 27 ceasefire agreement between the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah and the Israeli regime. This agreement aims to solidify peace in the region following recent hostilities. A supervisory committee, which includes representatives from Lebanon, the Israeli regime, France, the US, and UNIFIL, is responsible for monitoring and reporting any breaches of Resolution 1701.
