US Accused of Breaching International Obligations with Restrictions on Iranian Delegation

New york: Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has asserted that the United States violated its international obligations by imposing what he termed as illegal restrictions on the Iranian delegation. In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Iravani detailed these allegations, stating that the restrictions were a gross violation of the Host Country's commitments under international law.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the letter highlights the imposition of movement restrictions on key Iranian officials, including President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Dr. Seyed Abbas Araghchi, during their visit to New York for the UN General Assembly. These restrictions confined the delegation's movements to a limited area around the UN Headquarters and required prior approval for any travel outside this zone, impacting their ability to attend meetings.

The letter further accuses the United States of subjecting the Iranian representatives to invasive measures, such as requiring requests for purchasing essentials and reporting their purchases to U.S. authorities. This, Iravani argues, infringes on their inviolability and dignity. He also criticizes the U.S. for spreading disinformation against the Iranian delegation as part of its "maximum pressure" strategy.

The ambassador emphasized that these actions contravene several international agreements, including the UN Charter and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. He called upon the UN Secretary-General to take urgent measures to ensure the United States adheres to its obligations, warning that failure to do so undermines the UN's functionality and the rights of member states.

Iravani concluded his letter by urging the United Nations to uphold the rights and dignity of member states' representatives and to prevent any further hindrance to their functions. The letter has been requested to be circulated as an official document of the UN General Assembly to address the ongoing issue with the Host Country.
