Minab:Tehran Khosrow Hakimi, the Iranian Deputy Secretary of the High Council for Human Rights, has identified US military attacks against Iran as the most significant human rights issue of 2026.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Hakimi emphasized the necessity of transparency, accountability, the prohibition of discrimination, and the cessation of double standards to safeguard human rights. Speaking at a ceremony unveiling annual reports on human rights violations in the United States and the United Kingdom, he highlighted serious concerns stemming from US military operations outside its territory, including their impact on the right to life.
Hakimi pointed out the significance of US military attacks against Iran on February 28, 2026, which were addressed by an independent United Nations mechanism. The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran published its report on September 17, 2026, which suggested that two US airstrikes might have constituted war crimes. One such attack targeted the Shajareh Tayyebeh elementary school in Minab, Hormuzgan Province, resulting in the deaths of over 150 people, including approximately 120 children.
Furthermore, Hakimi referenced another attack on a sports complex and a residential area in Lamerd County, Fars Province, which used precision-guided missiles and resulted in 22 civilian deaths. He underscored the need to remember the victims of these attacks amid ongoing political and military developments.
Hakimi also addressed issues in the United Kingdom, particularly the British government's response to protests and its stance on US military operations against Iran. Despite not participating in the initial attacks, the UK allowed the US to use its military bases for activities described as defensive.
He reiterated the importance of uniform standards of international law in addressing attacks on civilian targets and the treatment of detainees and migrants. Hakimi called for accountability and equal application of human rights standards to all nations, urging the international community to uphold international obligations without bias.
