Tehran: Iranian Vice President and Head of the Department of Environment has highlighted the significant role of renewable energy development in addressing energy imbalances and enhancing energy availability in the country. In a recent statement, she emphasized the potential impact of renewable energy projects on Iran's energy landscape.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran's 7th Development Plan (2023-27) projects the generation of 12,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy. Shina Ansari, in her interview with IRNA, expressed optimism that the Ministry of Energy would meet its ambitious target of producing 30,000 MW of renewable energy. Her remarks were publicized on Saturday in conjunction with National Clean Air Day, which is observed on January 18.
Ansari further elaborated on the strategic shift towards renewable resources, including wind energy and the establishment of solar power facilities. This transition aims to diminish Iran's dependence on fossil fuels, which are a primary source of air pollution globally. The Vice President underscored the environmental benefits of renewable energy, noting its potential to significantly reduce air pollution levels.
A report issued by Iran's Center for Air Pollution Research has revealed alarming statistics, indicating that approximately 50,000 deaths were attributed to air pollution in the country during the last Iranian year, which commenced on March 19, 2024. This data underscores the urgent need for Iran to pursue cleaner energy alternatives to improve public health and environmental conditions.
