Taipei: An estimated 3,000 people marched on the streets of Taipei at the 2025 Taiwan Trans March on Friday night to show support for the community, according to the organizer, Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBTQ+) Hotline Association. The event focused on advocating for the rights of transgender individuals and challenging existing prejudices.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the march was themed "Break Prejudice, Shine Diversity" and began at 228 Peace Memorial Park. Participants proceeded through the Ximending shopping district before returning to the park. Despite intermittent rain, attendees waved transgender and rainbow flags while urging the Taiwanese government to eliminate the requirement for mandatory surgery to change gender markers on identification documents. The crowd also voiced opposition to transphobia.
Po, a transgender man and volunteer with the Tongzhi Hotline, highlighted the significance of the march, noting it as a rare event dedicated to the transgender community. He expressed that such gatherings help the minority feel supported. Po shared his personal journey, recounting that he recognized his gender identity in high school and began hormone therapy during college. He received minimal resistance from family and substantial support from friends.
June Chua, a transgender activist from Singapore and founder of an LBTQ+ shelter, also participated in the march. She emphasized the importance of visibility for marginalized groups, expressing her surprise and happiness at seeing diverse participation. This marked her first attendance at the Taiwan march, an event she noted is not seen in Singapore.
The Tongzhi Hotline, in a press statement, expressed that the march held particular significance in 2025 due to global setbacks in transgender rights. These included policy rollbacks in the United States and a UK Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of a woman. As one of the few marches in Asia focusing on transgender issues, the Taiwan Trans March continues to play a crucial role in advocacy.
On Saturday, the Taiwan LGBT+ Pride 2025 is planned to start at 2:25 p.m. in front of Taipei City Hall, with a theme titled "Beyond Links: More than Clicks."
