Araghchi Declares Expired Resolutions Under Resolution 2231 as Null and Void

New york: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has conveyed a firm message to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, asserting that the Islamic Republic of Iran unequivocally rejects any attempts to reinstate resolutions that were previously terminated under resolution 2231 (2015).

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi’s letter highlights Iran’s stance against the recent endeavors by France, the United Kingdom, and the United States to keep Iran’s nuclear program on the agenda of the Security Council. These attempts, which involve reinstating resolutions that were nullified by resolution 2231, are deemed legally flawed and procedurally invalid by Iran. Araghchi criticized the E3-France, the UK, and the US-for failing to honor their obligations and bypassing the Dispute Resolution Mechanism of the JCPOA, labeling their actions as an abuse of process.

The letter further emphasizes that the issues related to Iran’s nuclear program were resolved through the JCPOA and Resolution 2231, and any attempts to revive terminated resolutions lack legal and political justification. Araghchi pointed out that military actions by Israel and the United States against Iran’s nuclear facilities have significantly altered the circumstances, rendering the terminated resolutions obsolete.

Araghchi’s communication also references the recent vote on a draft resolution submitted by the Republic of Korea, where China, Russia, Algeria, and Pakistan opposed the reimposition of sanctions. The abstentions from the Council President, the Republic of Korea, and Guyana highlighted the draft’s lack of legitimacy. The outcome of the vote demonstrated the Security Council’s division and the absence of consensus on reimposing sanctions against Iran.

In his statement to the Security Council, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s rejection of any attempts to revive terminated sanctions and asserted that resolution 2231 will expire as initially agreed, with nuclear-related restrictions ending permanently on 18 October 2025. Iran will not acknowledge any efforts to extend, revive, or enforce these sanctions thereafter.

Araghchi concluded by calling on the UN Secretary-General to prevent Western states from misusing the UN Secretariat for political coercion against Iran and emphasized Iran’s readiness for diplomacy aimed at balanced solutions. He warned that any attempt to harm Iran would be met with appropriate responses, holding those opting for confrontation and pressure accountable for their actions.
