Tehran: Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has firmly stated that the Iranian people will not accept any deprivation of their right to maintain a peaceful nuclear program. Araqchi's remarks came during a meeting with members of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs in Tehran.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araqchi emphasized Iran's commitment to its right to a peaceful nuclear program under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (N.P.T.), while simultaneously adhering to the prohibition of nuclear weapons. He affirmed Iran's sincerity in the ongoing indirect negotiations with the U.S. and reiterated Iran's dedication to advocating for a nuclear-free West Asia.
Araqchi expressed Iran's willingness to engage in confidence-building measures to prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear initiatives but made it clear that the nation will not relinquish its right to uranium enrichment. He acknowledged the significant financial and human investment in Iran's nuclear program and the sacrifices made by Iranian scientists, underscoring the country's commitment to advancing nuclear knowledge through constructive international cooperation.
He also criticized the inconsistency in U.S. officials' comments regarding negotiations, pointing to the ongoing talks between Tehran and Washington concerning the lifting of sanctions and Iran's peaceful nuclear program. Despite facing external pressures, Iran remains steadfast in defending its positions within international frameworks, Araqchi added.
The Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs aim to utilize scientific expertise and rational analysis to address the risks associated with nuclear arms and other weapons of mass destruction.
