Tehran: Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has expressed concerns over the reduction of the United Nations' primary role to merely preventing warfare between superpowers, describing it as a misleading and dangerous interpretation of the UN Charter.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei voiced his concerns in a post on his X account, referencing Dag Hammarskj¶ld's warning against reducing the UN to a static platform serving great-power diplomacy. Baqaei emphasized that the UN should act as a dynamic instrument for safeguarding the security of smaller nations.

He criticized the current Secretary-General for seemingly reducing the organization's purpose to avoiding conflict between major powers. Baqaei argued that this minimalist view distorts Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force in relations among states. He warned that such an interpretation risks rendering most UN members irrelevant, excusing wars, undermining the Charter's founding principles, and ignoring atrocities committed by superpowers.

Baqaei questioned whether the Secretary-General's approach is appropriate, particularly as his tenure nears its end. He highlighted conflicts in regions such as Korea, Vietnam, the Congo, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Sudan, and Gaza, suggesting that under this framework, these are mistakenly seen as successes.
