BRICS Declaration Echoes Iran’s Stance on Key International Issues

Tehran: Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi has emphasized that BRICS' New Delhi Declaration aligns with Iran's positions on key issues, including opposition to unilateral sanctions, condemnation of attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities, support for Iran's World Trade Organization (WTO) membership bid, and backing for Palestinian rights.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Gharibabadi discussed the main points of the New Delhi Declaration, the final document of the 18th BRICS Summit, which was adopted at the conclusion of the leaders' meeting. Referring to Article 29 of the declaration, Gharibabadi noted a global consensus on the illegality of attacks against nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards, a principle consistently stressed by Iran.

He further elaborated on Articles 22 and 27, highlighting BRICS' condemnation of unilateral coercive measures, including economic sanctions, as actions contrary to international law. Gharibabadi asserted that this position effectively challenges the legitimacy of sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies against Iran and other nations.

Gharibabadi also pointed out that Article 20 of the declaration strongly supports Iran's WTO membership request, which aligns with broader efforts to reform and strengthen the multilateral trading system, increasing the role of the Global South. He emphasized that Articles 7, 13, 17, and 18 reaffirm the need for a shift from a unipolar order to a fairer, multipolar international system, a principle integral to Iran's foreign policy.

Regarding Articles 30 to 34, Gharibabadi stated that the declaration condemns Israeli actions against Palestinians and supports their legitimate rights. He also referred to Article 25, which underscores the importance of establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, addressing the Israeli regime's nuclear program within this framework.

Article 40 of the declaration, which condemns all acts of terrorism, supports Iran's stance that the international community should confront terrorism without political selectivity. Gharibabadi noted that Articles 2, 7, and 10, emphasizing multilateralism and a multipolar world order, align with Iran's strategy of expanding cooperation with the East and the Global South.

Gharibabadi concluded that the alignment with BRICS' New Delhi Declaration indicates a growing consensus among Global South nations on Iran's foreign policy approach of strengthening cooperation with emerging and developing countries.
