Tehran: Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has dismissed concerns that a joint meeting announcement between Iran and the Persian Gulf states has contributed to a drop in global oil prices. He emphasized that diplomatic decisions should not be influenced by a single factor and that prioritizing national interests at the right time is crucial.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei addressed criticisms suggesting the meeting should have been delayed due to its perceived impact on weakening pressure on Iran's adversaries. He stated, "With this kind of approach, one can always argue that now is not the time for a particular diplomatic action." He further explained that decisions in diplomacy should not be based on one sole consideration, and the focus should remain on securing national interests appropriately.
The spokesperson underscored the importance of viewing diplomatic engagement with regional countries within the larger framework of Iran's security and foreign-policy goals. He highlighted the significance of Iran's success in encouraging regional dialogue without foreign interference, noting it as a substantial achievement.
Baqaei also refuted the characterization of Iran's current situation as "neither war nor peace," asserting that the country is indeed in a state of war. He clarified that ongoing economic sanctions and a naval blockade by adversaries constitute an economic war, thus qualifying as a state of war under international law, specifically referencing UN General Assembly Resolution 3314.
Addressing repeated US accusations of Iran's involvement in Yemen, Baqaei described these allegations as a consistent pattern in US policy that seeks to deflect its own mistakes onto others. He criticized this approach for misleading public opinion and preventing the US from addressing its challenges.
Baqaei reaffirmed Iran's readiness to aid in facilitating dialogue in Yemen and implementing a roadmap agreed upon by Yemenis and relevant parties, including Saudi Arabia. He emphasized that Iran's stance remains principled and aligned with the agreements made by the involved parties.
