Tehran: The Judiciary's deputy for international affairs, Nasser Seraj, has declared that any attempt to alter the historical name of the Persian Gulf is considered a hostile and provocative act. Seraj, who also serves as the secretary of Iran's High Council for Human Rights, emphasized that such actions violate the fundamental principles of human rights, infringe upon the cultural rights of nations, and attack the historical identity of Iranians.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Seraj stated that the Persian Gulf is an inseparable part of Iranian history, with its roots deeply embedded in human civilization. He noted that the strategic waterway has been recognized by the same name for centuries in maps, official documents, and diplomatic correspondence. Seraj further clarified that efforts to change the ancient name of the Persian Gulf are entirely political, biased, and driven by anti-Iranian intentions from parties whose hostility towards the country is well-documented.
Seraj underscored Iran's acceptance of names such as the Sea of Oman, the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea, and the Red Sea in accordance with international norms. However, he insisted that any attempt to distort the name of the Persian Gulf serves only to provoke public opinion and harm the national sentiments of Iranians. He commended Iranians for their strong reactions and protests, highlighting their unity as a definitive response to the biased notion and affirming that the Persian Gulf is not only a part of Iran but also an integral component of the Iranian identity.
The official also warned that actions by Google and other international platforms to misname the Persian Gulf would ultimately damage their credibility.
