TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has criticized the European Union's (EU) reported plans to impose sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) over allegations of supplying weapons to Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi expressed his disapproval in a post on his X account late on Sunday, accusing the EU of relying on unfounded pretexts similar to those used to sanction Iran's national airline last month. He emphasized that even Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged there have been no Iranian missile deliveries to Russia intended for the war in Ukraine. Araghchi argued that the EU is now using the same baseless missile allegations to target Iran's shipping lines. He stated, "There is no legal, logical or moral basis for such behavior," and cautioned that the EU's plan to impose sanctions on IRISL would contradict the principle of freedom of navigation, a fundamental tenet of the law of the sea. He warned that this measure could have unintended negative consequences. The US-based Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that the EU is expected to announce sanctions on Iran's shipping industry on Monday.
