Asheville: The European Union has reiterated its call for Iran to curb its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, urging the country to refrain from destabilising activities in the region and Europe. This statement was issued in the context of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meetings held on 31 August and 1 September in Asheville, US.

According to European Union, continued diplomatic efforts are deemed necessary to achieve a peace settlement, restore regional stability, and ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The EU has imposed extensive sanctions to prevent Iran from exploiting the global economy and financial system to sustain hostile actions, with readiness to implement further measures if required to safeguard security and interests, including freedom of navigation.

The EU has expressed its support for efforts aimed at ensuring Iran ceases its destabilising activities and enters peace negotiations in good faith, potentially through additional economic pressure such as the US-led Operation Economic Outcast. The EU remains committed to collaborating with the United States, other G7 members, and international partners to maintain pressure on Iran, contributing to de-escalation and regional stability.
