Moscow: The decisions by several European countries, including France and Britain, to recognize Palestine are not driven by a genuine shift in foreign policy, but rather by fears of mounting public anger and potential civil unrest, a Bosnian political analyst has said. In an exclusive interview with IRNA’s correspondent in Moscow on Tuesday, Emina Sahinovic warned that such gestures also serve as a cover for Europe’s complicity in Israel’s ongoing crimes in Gaza.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Sahinovic explained that the motivation behind some European countries considering recognition of Palestine stems from a fear of public unrest, especially given Israel’s loss in the PR and media battle, despite its significant control over mainstream media. She cited France’s reluctance to see a repeat of the Yellow Vests movement as an example. Additionally, Sahinovic suggested that these moves act as a distraction from their own role and complicity in what she describes as a digital genocide.
When asked whether the actions of European countries could be seen as independent actions towards establishing peace, Sahinovic expressed skepticism. She argued that European countries are merely attempting to buy peace and preserve the remnants of the so-called ‘international community,’ ‘international law,’ and the myth of international institutions. She pointed out that these frameworks have consistently served Western interests rather than genuine global justice, echoing arguments from Professors Walt and Mearsheimer in their book, “The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy.”
In response to a question about US President Donald Trump’s lack of a strong position against French President Emmanuel Macron’s recognition of Palestine, Sahinovic suggested that it might indicate a covert understanding between Paris, Washington, and Tel Aviv. She noted that the United States might also be trying to salvage some credibility for ‘international law,’ given the uncertain direction of the global order and the damaged trust in international institutions and laws.
Regarding the potential benefits of European countries recognizing Palestine for the Palestinian people, Sahinovic expressed doubt about any significant impact. She noted that while it might increase pressure on Israel to slow down or temporarily halt its actions, Israel has historically only responded to military resistance, as demonstrated during the 12-day war.
