First Iranian Translator of Cyrus Cylinder, Prof. Abdolmajid Arfaei Passes Away

Tehran: Professor Abdolmajid Arfaei, a researcher and specialist in ancient Akkadian and Elamite languages, and the first Iranian translator of the Achaemenid royal inscription on the Cyrus Cylinder, has passed away at the age of 87.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Arfaei died early Wednesday, February 25, 2026, after years of scholarly activity in historical research and translation of ancient texts, particularly cuneiform script. Professor Arfaei taught at various academic and research centers across Iran and played a significant role in educating and mentoring students in ancient languages.

He was among the few Iranian experts who devoted part of his life to translating documents and inscriptions from ancient periods, focusing on Elamite and Akkadian languages. Professor Arfaei's name is notably linked to the Persian translation of the Cyrus Cylinder, a significant document from the Achaemenid era.

In acknowledgment of his scholarly contributions to cultural heritage, he was honored with the Persian Cypress Award, which is given to influential figures in this field.
