Tehran: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has underscored the significance of friendship associations and civil society organizations in bolstering Iran's public diplomacy and fostering people-to-people connections. He announced the formation of a working group with activists in this field, slated to commence within the next two months.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei addressed a gathering on the occasion of the national week dedicated to civil society organizations and social participation. He emphasized that non-governmental organizations are not only the result of a robust civil society but also a driving force for its growth. He pointed out that numerous groups, particularly friendship associations, maintain international connections despite their primary focus on domestic activities.

Baqaei regarded friendship associations as essential allies for the Foreign Ministry in both formal and public diplomacy. He expressed the ministry's intention to share its expertise with civil society activists and pursue enhanced collaboration on international matters.

Moreover, Baqaei highlighted the necessity of documenting the environmental destruction caused by recent US and Israeli military actions against Iran, advocating for global awareness of these impacts that transcend national boundaries.

He also mentioned that Iranian NGOs have the potential to communicate the nation's stances on issues like sanctions and breaches of international humanitarian law on the global stage. The Foreign Ministry, he noted, could assist in their engagement at international platforms, such as sessions of the UN Human Rights Council, when suitable.

Further, Baqaei indicated that NGOs could aid in chronicling criminal incidents in Minab and Lamerd for historical documentation and possible submission to domestic and international legal entities. He asserted that civil society organizations are instrumental in conveying Iran's experiences and viewpoints to the international community.

He reiterated that friendship associations play a crucial role in fostering people-to-people interactions and can offer valuable cultural and diplomatic connections with communities abroad. Baqaei concluded that recognizing and harnessing these capacities would reinforce Iran's public diplomacy and expand its global outreach.
