G7 Leaders Tackle Middle East Crisis Amid Rising Tensions with Iran and Israel

Kananaskis: As the Group of Seven leaders convene in Canada for a critical summit, the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran has demanded urgent attention alongside the ongoing war in Ukraine. The leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States are focusing on strategies to prevent further escalation in the Middle East while also addressing the situation in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also in attendance and is expected to engage in discussions with US President Donald Trump.

According to Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty, the hostilities between Israel and Iran intensified on June 15, coinciding with the G7 summit's commencement. Israel's military actions, aimed at thwarting Iran's nuclear ambitions, resulted in significant casualties, with Iran reporting 224 deaths and over 1,277 hospitalizations, predominantly affecting civilians. Israel has also suffered losses, with at least 10 fatalities, including children.

Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at the G7 summit, attributed the renewed violence to Iran, highlighting the UN nuclear watchdog's report of Iran's non-compliance with its nuclear obligations. She emphasized that Israel's right to self-defense was justified, labeling Iran as a source of regional instability. Von der Leyen stressed the need for the G7 to address the intertwined threats posed by Iran's provision of drones and ballistic missiles to Russia, affecting both Ukraine and Israel.

The ongoing exchange of hostilities has seen Israel targeting Iran's Defense Ministry and related infrastructure, while Iran has launched missiles into Israeli cities, resulting in further casualties and destruction. The conflict's potential to escalate further has prompted Iranian officials to question the viability of continuing nuclear negotiations with the United States, alongside threats to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The summit discussions are expected to focus on applying additional pressure on Russia to negotiate a ceasefire in Ukraine, while also managing the precarious situation in the Middle East. The recent violence has compounded regional tensions, following previous conflicts such as Hamas's attack on southern Israel in October 2023 and Israel's subsequent military response in Gaza.
