Riyadh: Iran's Deputy Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, has highlighted the outcomes of an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League attended by officials from more than 50 countries in Saudi Arabia's capital, Riyadh. Iran's First Vice President, Mohammadreza Aref, represented the country in the OIC meeting, which concluded with a joint communique emphasizing the centrality of the Palestinian issue and warning against the violation of Iran's sovereignty. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, during his address, Aref pointed out several challenges, including the indifference of the international community that has emboldened the Zionist regime to kill Palestinians. He called for collective action by Islamic and Arab countries to achieve three main goals: stopping the crimes of the occupying regime, taking necessary measures to ensure these crimes are not repeated, and securing adequate compensation for the damage caused to th e people of Palestine and Lebanon by the occupying regime. In his assessment of the joint meeting, Gharibabadi noted the escalation of aggression and crimes by the Zionist regime against the Palestinian and Lebanese people in recent months and the deterioration of the situation in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, as well as in Lebanon. He reported that a request to hold an emergency OIC meeting at the leadership level was initiated to urgently address the situation, condemn the aggressions and crimes, and adopt decisive and practical measures. Gharibabadi explained that the initiative was proposed through a letter from the Iranian Foreign Minister to the Secretary General of the OIC, followed by discussions during a face-to-face meeting in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. He mentioned that Iranian diplomat Abbas Araghchi raised the issue of holding an emergency meeting of heads of Islamic countries during recent regional trips and meetings with officials and counterparts. S audi Arabia convened an emergency joint meeting of Islamic and Arab countries in Riyadh by sending invitations to heads of these nations. In preparation for a draft resolution, foreign ministers of Islamic and Arab countries met to discuss the current situation in Palestine and Lebanon in the face of Zionist aggressions. Gharibabadi emphasized the need for more effective practical measures to stop the crimes of the Zionist regime. Participants exchanged views on issues such as establishing a ceasefire in Palestine and Lebanon, reopening humanitarian crossings in Gaza, releasing Palestinian prisoners, enabling the dignified return of refugees, and aiding reconstruction efforts in Gaza. The meeting also addressed the Zionist regime's hostile actions against the legitimacy of the United Nations, concluding that it was time to expel the regime from the UN. Gharibabadi stated that Iran submitted a written proposal to the OIC Secretariat, significantly influencing the draft of the final document of the emergency meeting. The proposal included requests for implementing the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion on ending the occupation, compelling the Israeli regime to respect international law, condemning the Israeli regime's invasions, and ensuring withdrawal of forces from occupied territories while respecting the sovereignty of Palestine and Lebanon. Further requests included an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza, unhindered humanitarian aid access, arms embargoes on the Israeli regime, expulsion or suspension of Israel's UN membership, condemnation of Israeli actions against UNRWA, and accountability for extreme statements by Israeli ministers. The proposal also called for the release of Palestinian prisoners and requested UN members to impose sanctions on the Israeli regime to enforce compliance with international law and relevant resolutions.
