Tehran: Good progress was reportedly made during the talks held in Switzerland regarding the implementation of commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei. The discussions, which took place at the Burgenstock mountaintop resort, involved delegations from Iran, the United States, and two mediating countries, Pakistan and Qatar. Iran's main objective in attending the meeting was to demand the implementation of commitments under the MoU.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the quadrilateral meeting was marked by Iran's concerns over the US president's comments leading up to the talks, which nearly caused the Iranian delegation to reject participation. Despite these tensions, the meeting continued with the help of mediators from Qatar and Pakistan, ensuring the discussions remained within the quadrilateral framework through indirect communication.
The Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, expressed significant concerns regarding the other party's fulfillment of obligations, particularly pointing out the continued violation of the ceasefire by the Israeli regime. The Iranian team emphasized the importance of ensuring the other party complies with its obligations, as this was the primary reason for their presence in Switzerland.
Baqaei highlighted that the exchange of messages during the talks led to positive developments, specifically regarding Clause 1 of the MoU. A mechanism was established with the mediators' assistance, known as the 'Deconfliction Cell,' aimed at ensuring a sustainable ceasefire in Lebanon as mandated by the memorandum.
The discussions also addressed remaining clauses necessary for final agreement negotiations, with important messages exchanged about issues such as licenses for selling Iranian oil and commitments to release Iran's frozen assets. Additionally, a mechanism was set up concerning the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Both Iran and US negotiators agreed on critical steps to initiate negotiations on a final agreement, contingent on the seriousness of the other side's implementation efforts.
