Gaza: The Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, has condemned the Israeli treatment of Palestinian prisoners, describing the brutal torture of detainees as a clear war crime and a violation of international law.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Hamas stated that the abuses occurring at Ofer Prison, under the oversight of Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, are in direct violation of international law and represent a blatant challenge to global norms. The statement further criticized the international community's silence and the approval of the death penalty, arguing that these actions enable what they referred to as a 'fascist regime' to perpetuate violent practices within the prisons.
Earlier reports from Ahmad Al-Farra, head of Nasser Hospital in Gaza, highlighted the severity of the torture, which has reportedly made the identification of prisoners' remains extremely challenging. Al-Farra indicated that while Israeli authorities know the identities of the bodies returned to Gaza, they withhold this information, leaving only one in seven bodies positively identifiable.
Al-Farra detailed how decomposition or torture has erased key identifying features on some bodies, with some cases showing evidence of being stuffed with cotton, raising suspicions of organ theft. He also noted that certain corpses bore signs of torture, including burns from hot rods on their stomachs, suggesting they were burned before death.
Hamas has urged the international community to take action, labeling these abuses as ongoing war crimes that require accountability.
