History Will Not Forget Perpetrators, Supporters of Sardasht Chemical Bombing: Iran Envoy

Baghdad: Iran's ambassador to Germany says that history will remember not only those directly responsible for the chemical bombing of Sardasht City in West Azarbaijan Province, but also those who enabled the atrocity by providing technology, equipment, or remaining silent.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, in a message posted on X on Sunday to mark the anniversary of the Sardasht chemical attack, Majid Nili described Sardasht as the first city in the world to suffer a large-scale chemical assault after World War II.

Nili said that on the anniversary of the tragedy, the victims were being remembered, adding that history would hold not only the direct perpetrators accountable but would also remember those who contributed by supplying technology and equipment, as well as those whose silence helped make the crime possible.

On June 28, 1987, the former Iraqi Ba'ath regime launched a chemical attack against the civilian population of Sardasht City using internationally prohibited chemical weapons. Iranian officials have long maintained that the attack was carried out with the backing of major powers.

The bombardment targeted four densely populated areas of the northwestern border city, killing 119 civilians and exposing more than 8,000 residents to toxic chemical agents, leaving many with long-term health complications.

The Sardasht attack is regarded as one of the deadliest chemical assaults against civilians and is widely recognized in Iran as the first city targeted by chemical weapons since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
