Tehran: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has refrained from condemning the aggressive and illegal US attack on the Darkhovin nuclear power plant, which is still under construction in Iran's southwestern Khuzestan province.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, in a post on its X account on Sunday, while not condemning the attack, the IAEA stated that it is investigating reports of an overnight attack on the construction site of the planned nuclear power plant in Darkhovin, Iran. The facility, which is in the early stages of construction, contained no nuclear material during the IAEA's last inspection. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasized the need for military restraint near all nuclear-related sites, despite the reported attack not posing any radiological risk. The agency has reached out to Iran for further information and will update as more details become available.
On the same day, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) issued a statement strongly condemning the US attack on the Darkhovin nuclear power plant. The statement accused the US of engaging in an aggressive and brutal act that violates international law by targeting the plant at approximately 3:39 AM local time. The AEOI described the Darkhovin plant as a symbol of Iranian dignity and scientific self-sufficiency, highlighting that several projectiles were used to target the under-construction site.
The US has conducted a series of strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, which are under international safeguards, over the past year. These actions are part of an ongoing conflict that Washington has pursued in conjunction with the Israeli regime. The latest statement from AEOI comes amid escalating tensions in the region, following a renewed US campaign that breaches a memorandum of understanding signed last month to end hostilities.
