Tehran: Iran and Oman are engaged in ongoing discussions to establish a mechanism for safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei indicating that the two nations have yet to finalize a joint statement on the matter. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei, speaking at his weekly press conference, addressed inquiries regarding potential transit fees for ships using the proposed route, stating that such details are not currently part of the discussions.
"We are not discussing such details at this stage. The discussions are still continuing," Baqaei noted, emphasizing that the two countries have already reached an understanding on the navigation route. He added that there are still technical points under discussion concerning the joint statement, but the negotiations are proceeding smoothly and constructively.
Baqaei elaborated that the discussions include mechanisms for monitoring the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, cooperation on environmental issues, maritime services, and combating crime. He remarked, "Obviously, when you provide maritime services, you should also receive compensation for them."
When questioned about the outcome of Iran-Oman talks and Iran's conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Baqaei dismissed claims that the waterway had been closed due to a disagreement between the two countries. He attributed the closure to US-Israeli military aggression against Iran and the exploitation of the strait, asserting that the determination of the shipping route is a bilateral matter between Iran and Oman.
Baqaei acknowledged that while the arrangement would impact international shipping, the negotiations themselves are strictly between the two coastal states, aimed at reaching an agreement on a safe route through the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that reopening the strait relies on the removal of conditions imposed due to US-Israeli military actions, emphasizing that the US maritime blockade must end for the strait to be considered secure.
On the topic of President Masoud Pezeshkian's potential trip to New York for the UN General Assembly session, Baqaei indicated that no final decision has been made, and discussions will occur closer to the event. He highlighted Iran's intention to present its positions at the session, contingent on circumstances and developments.
Addressing his recent remarks about US President Donald Trump, Baqaei referenced a quote by George Bernard Shaw, "when you wrestle with pigs, you cannot expect not to get dirty," to explain Iran's use of its literary and cultural heritage in diplomatic confrontations.
