Tehran: President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran and his Tajik counterpart, Emomali Rahmon, engaged in a dialogue to evaluate and strengthen the bilateral relationship between their nations. The discussion took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and SCO Plus Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, both leaders reviewed recent developments in cooperation between Tehran and Dushanbe. They emphasized leveraging existing capacities to further develop and deepen ties across various sectors. President Pezeshkian highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and civilizational links that bind Iran and Tajikistan, suggesting these connections as a solid foundation for future relations. He also congratulated Tajikistan on its independence anniversary and recognized the support of the Tajik government towards Iran.

Pezeshkian expressed Iran's readiness to enhance collaboration in political, economic, scientific, and cultural domains. He affirmed Iran's commitment to the effective implementation of agreements and memoranda signed with Tajikistan, underscoring the strong existing relationship and the potential for further cooperation.

President Rahmon echoed the sentiment of deep-rooted ties and highlighted the potential for expanding cooperation, particularly in transportation, trade, and other economic sectors. He stressed the importance of ongoing diplomatic interactions to build on the progress made in bilateral relations.

The 26th Summit of SCO heads of state, which began on August 31, is hosted by Kyrgyzstan, the organization's chair for 2026. The summit's theme is '25 Years of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization: Together for Peace, Development, and Sustainable Prosperity.' President Pezeshkian, who arrived in Bishkek to attend the summit, is scheduled to deliver a speech and hold meetings with several leaders, including those from Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan.

During his visit, Pezeshkian will also attend the official opening ceremony of the sixth World Nomad Games, following an invitation from the Kyrgyz president.
