Iran Calls on UN Security Council to Condemn US Maritime Blockade

New York:Iran has called on the UN Security Council to condemn the United States for what it describes as continued aggression through a maritime blockade. Iran is demanding the immediate lifting of the blockade, warning that it, along with economic sanctions and threats against Iranian infrastructure, violates the UN Charter and international law and poses serious humanitarian risks to civilians.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran's Ambassador and Chargé d'Affaires to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council, Aglaia Balta, condemning the United States' continued aggression against Iran through a naval blockade. The letter, dated October 21, highlighted the grave consequences of the ongoing acts of aggression by the United States, which began on February 28, 2026, and the imposition of an illegal blockade.

The letter emphasized that the United States has escalated its hostile actions through a campaign of economic coercion, known as 'Operation Economic Outcast', targeting Iran's aviation and other vital sectors. Iran argues that these measures, along with the maritime blockade, amount to collective punishment prohibited under international humanitarian and human rights law.

Iran's letter noted that the maritime blockade is part of broader acts of aggression and violates Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force against a state's territorial integrity. The blockade is said to have significant humanitarian implications, disrupting access to essential supplies needed for civilian life, and violating international humanitarian law.

The letter also addressed the impact of US measures on Iran's civil aviation sector, citing a disregard for a binding Order by the International Court of Justice. Iran called on the UN Security Council to condemn the US actions, lift the blockade, and recognize the US's responsibility for its internationally wrongful acts. Iran stressed the importance of accountability and stated its intention to pursue all legal avenues to ensure reparation and accountability for the consequences of these actions.

The letter concluded by reiterating Iran's commitment to exercising its right to self-defense in accordance with the UN Charter.
