Iran Commends Russia and China for Vetoing US Anti-Iran Resolution

New york: Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations has expressed gratitude to Russia and China for their negative votes that blocked a US-sponsored anti-Iran resolution. The mission also acknowledged Pakistan and Somalia for abstaining and for their principled stances. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, during a UN Security Council meeting, the US draft resolution aimed at reviving the "Panel of Experts" under the illegal Resolution 1737 committee was not adopted. The draft, submitted with political motives, failed to pass due to the vetoes from Russia and China. Iran's mission highlighted that Russia and China upheld the UN Charter and international law, preventing what it termed as a hypocritical attempt by the United States and its allies to use the Security Council for political purposes. Iran expressed deep appreciation for the decisive actions of Russia and China, and commended Somalia and Pakistan for their valuable abstentions. The draft resolution was presented by the United States u nder the agenda 'Non-Proliferation,' concerning the activities of the 1737 Sanctions Committee on Iran. While the resolution received 11 positive votes, Russia and China's vetoes led to its rejection. The adoption of a resolution in the UN Security Council requires nine affirmative votes without a veto from any of the 15 members.
