Iran Condemns Israeli Airstrike and Assassination of Hezbollah Commander

Beirut: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran has strongly condemned the recent Israeli airstrike in Beirut, which resulted in the assassination of senior Hezbollah commander Haytham Ali Tabatabai. The attack targeted residential areas in the southern suburb of Dahiyeh, leading to significant casualties and drawing international criticism.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the Iranian Foreign Ministry released a statement late on Sunday, describing the strike as a ‘gross violation’ of the November 2024 ceasefire agreement and a ‘brutal attack’ on Lebanon’s sovereignty. The ministry called for accountability for what it termed Israeli ‘terrorist acts’ and war crimes.

The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah confirmed the martyrdom of Haytham Ali Tabatabai, along with four resistance fighters, during the airstrike. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, claimed the lives of at least five people and injured 28 others, including women and children.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry extended condolences to the victims’ families and honored Commander Tabatabai for his dedication to defending Lebanon. The ministry also criticized the United States for supporting Israel, suggesting that this backing contributes to repeated ceasefire violations by the Zionist regime.

Furthermore, the ministry urged the United Nations and the international community to take action against Israeli military actions, labeling these as threats to regional and global peace. The statement expressed regret over the perceived inaction of the United Nations and its Security Council in addressing Israel’s continuous aggressions against Lebanon.

The Iranian ministry called for international efforts to confront organized terrorism and counter the perceived warmongering by the Zionist regime in the region. It emphasized the global responsibility to address the threat posed by Israeli military activities, which it views as detrimental to both regional and international peace and security.

According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli attacks have resulted in nearly 4,000 deaths and the displacement of over 1.2 million residents in Lebanon since October 2023.
