Tehran: Europe is compromising its moral credibility and placing itself on the wrong side of history by appeasing Israel, while the regime is facing global outrage over its genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the spokesperson made the remarks in a post on X social media platform Sunday, three days after Hungary announced its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC). The decision came as Hungary hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing an ICC arrest warrant over the genocide in Gaza.
Baqaei highlighted the significance of the ICC's arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his then minister of military affairs, Yoav Gallant. Issued in November last year, these warrants reflect the widespread global outrage over genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The court, based in The Hague, Netherlands, has identified reasonable grounds to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant bear "criminal responsibility" for these actions during the war in Gaza.
The war, which commenced on October 7, 2023, has resulted in the deaths of nearly 50,695 people and injuries to 115,338 others, according to the latest updates from Gaza's Health Ministry. This ongoing conflict has led to increased scrutiny of European governments, as they face criticism from both domestic and international sources for their continued arms deliveries to Israel. Critics argue that these weapons contribute to the killing of civilians, including children, in Gaza.
Baqaei further accused Europe of dishonoring the "rule of law," betraying justice, and reinforcing impunity for atrocity crimes against Palestinians. He described Europe's actions as a "normalization of lawlessness" and a "banalization of atrocity," emphasizing the lethal consequences for innocent victims and humanity as a whole.
