New york: Iran's mission to the United Nations has accused the United States of continuing to evade accountability for historical incidents, specifically referencing the 1988 downing of Iran Air Flight 655 and a recent missile strike on an elementary school in Minab, Iran.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, in a statement issued on Friday, which marked the anniversary of the US's downing of Iran Air Flight 655 over the Persian Gulf, Iran's UN mission highlighted that the US Navy shot down the civilian airliner on July 3, 1988. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of all 290 people aboard, including 66 children.

The statement from Iran's mission criticized the US for not accepting responsibility for the incident. It further condemned the actions of the then US president, who awarded medals to the crew members involved in the incident.

The mission argued that such actions perpetuate a culture of impunity. It emphasized that the United States has not addressed the accountability for the downing of Flight 655, nor for the firing of Tomahawk missiles at a school in Minab, which resulted in the deaths of 168 students.
