Tehran: In a strong rebuttal to recent US claims, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, has dismissed the US narrative regarding attacks on Iranian oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, asserting that Iran's actions are purely defensive in nature. During a press briefing in Tehran, Baqaei refuted US allegations that its attacks on Iranian oil tankers were retaliatory measures following Iran's missile strikes on American warships.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei emphasized Iran's stance of self-defense, citing the ongoing maritime blockade and economic pressures from Washington as provocations. He referenced Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, affirming Iran's right to defend itself against what it perceives as aggressive actions by the United States.

The Iranian spokesperson further criticized US threats of additional attacks on Iranian tankers, arguing that such threats lack honor and violate principles by targeting commercial vessels.

In addressing security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz, Baqaei denied accusations that Iran is to blame for instability in the region. He attributed the insecurity to the US-Israeli aggression initiated earlier this year, claiming that the strategic waterway had been problem-free before these actions.

Baqaei also responded to inquiries about potential US-Iran negotiations regarding the nuclear program and regional security. He maintained that the onus is on the US to de-escalate tensions by halting aggressive actions and lifting sanctions, pointing to past violations of a memorandum of understanding by the US as a significant impediment to progress.

On diplomatic efforts, Baqaei revealed that Iran and Oman are collaborating to establish secure navigation routes through the Strait of Hormuz, with plans to formalize an agreement with the International Maritime Organization soon.

The spokesperson confirmed Iran's intention to participate in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, contingent upon the timely issuance of entry visas by the United States. He assured that Iran's UN mission in New York continues to operate effectively despite recent personnel changes.

Baqaei also touched on various other diplomatic issues, including a resolution on world map projections and the status of Iranian pilots in Qatar, underscoring ongoing negotiations and consular efforts to address these matters.
