Iran Envoy in Mexico Celebrates Fidel Castro as Symbol of National Independence

Puebla: Iranian Ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, has lauded Fidel Castro as a symbol of a nation's resolve to independently shape its own future. Pasandideh's remarks were delivered during a ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of Castro's birth, held in Puebla.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the event was attended by Aquiles Cordova, leader of the Torchbearers Movement, along with members of the group, and about 2,000 Mexican social and political activists and residents. In his tribute, Pasandideh highlighted Castro's historical significance, emphasizing his role as a symbol of the will of people who choose to determine their own destiny. He drew parallels between the struggles for independence and sovereignty in Latin America and Mexico, and the ongoing challenges faced by the Cuban people.

Pasandideh criticized the sanctions and economic pressures imposed on Cuba, advocating that ordinary citizens should not bear the brunt of political disputes. He also related Iran's own experiences with sanctions, noting the nation's steadfast resistance over the past 47 years against external pressures and foreign aggression. His speech resonated with the audience, eliciting applause and support.

Addressing the Cuban populace, Pasandideh declared solidarity, asserting that freedom-loving nations across the globe stand with Cuba in the pursuit of peace, justice, and national independence. His comments were met with enthusiastic applause and chants of "Viva Ir¡n!" from the crowd, symbolizing a shared sentiment of solidarity.

The Torchbearers Movement, which has previously shown solidarity with Iran, was also part of a rally on April 11, 2026, in Mexico City. This rally, involving around 1,000 participants, protested against US and Israeli actions towards Iran, advocating for peace and condemning violence.

During the Puebla ceremony, Aquiles Cordova, representing the Torchbearers Movement, praised Iran's resilience against external threats and highlighted the lessons that Mexico and the world could learn from Iran's endurance. He acknowledged the Iranian people's resistance against major powers as emblematic of a broader fight for humanity.

Cordova also paid homage to Fidel Castro, underscoring his enduring legacy as a leader who stood with his people, transforming Cuba post-revolution and achieving significant advancements in education and healthcare. He criticized mainstream media for downplaying Cuba's achievements and reiterated Castro's enduring inspiration for nations striving for independence and justice.

The ceremony concluded with participants reaffirming their friendship and solidarity with the people of Mexico, Cuba, and Iran, honoring Fidel Castro's legacy.
