Tehran: Iran's national football team drew 1-1 with Egypt in its final Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday, remaining unbeaten after three consecutive draws while keeping hopes of advancing to the knockout stage as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the match, played in Seattle, saw Egypt take an early lead in the fifth minute through Mahmoud Saber. Iran had a golden opportunity to equalize five minutes later when Mehdi Taremi won a penalty, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir denied his effort.

Iran responded quickly in the 14th minute as Ramin Rezaeian converted the rebound after Milad Mohammadi's shot was saved, leveling the score at 1-1.

The second half was largely controlled by Egypt, although Iran remained dangerous on the counterattack. Egypt substituted star forward Mohamed Salah in the 56th minute, while Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand produced several important saves to keep his side in the match.

Iran came close to claiming victory in stoppage time. Shoja Khalilzadeh found the net in the 93rd minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. Four minutes later, Saeid Ezatolahi's header struck the crossbar.

The result left Iran third in Group G with three points from three draws. Belgium topped the group with five points, while Egypt also finished on five points but with an inferior goal difference. Iran must now await results from other groups to determine whether it qualifies among the best third-placed teams.
