Iran Maintains Nuclear Policy Amid Discussions on Deterrence

Tehran: Iran's nuclear policy remains unchanged, and discussions around nuclear deterrence are considered a natural response following repeated attacks and sabotage on its nuclear facilities, stated Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei. He refuted claims suggesting that Tehran is altering its nuclear doctrine or contemplating withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei addressed reporters during a weekly press conference, emphasizing that adversaries have undermined the NPT while questioning the discourse on nuclear deterrence. He highlighted that the NPT's core purpose is to prevent nuclear proliferation while enabling the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Progress on disarmament has been insufficient, proliferation remains unchecked, and restrictions have been placed on the peaceful nuclear activities of developing countries, including Iran.

Baqaei noted that despite Iran's nuclear facilities being under International Atomic Energy Agency supervision, they have been subject to numerous sabotage acts. Tehran remains committed to its NPT safeguards obligations, making discussions on deterrence by lawmakers and other figures not out of the ordinary.

On the topic of the Strait of Hormuz, Baqaei refrained from commenting on media speculation regarding potential US pressure on Persian Gulf states. He asserted that the security of the Strait concerns its two coastal states, Iran and Oman, and attributed current insecurity to US actions.

Regarding Iran's international relations, Baqaei emphasized that Iran's ties with Turkey go beyond merely conveying messages between Tehran and Washington. He described the countries as partners with shared interests and ongoing diplomatic engagements. Iran and Turkey's relationship covers various fields, with a focus on common concerns over Israeli expansionism.

Baqaei addressed claims of restrictions on Iran-Turkey trade, stating these issues are under discussion and cautioning against media campaigns amplifying the impact of US economic sanctions. He affirmed Iran's commitment to counter measures it deems contrary to international law through diplomatic channels.

He also welcomed China's role in regional security, appreciating Beijing's constructive efforts in promoting stability. Baqaei acknowledged China's valuable input at the BRICS summit, while emphasizing that Iran's issue with the United States stems from Washington's lack of genuine willingness to engage in diplomacy.

Passenger traffic at Iran-Iraq border crossings has resumed following diplomatic contacts, with commercial crossings expected to normalize soon, facilitating trade. Additionally, a meeting between President Masoud Pezeshkian and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was organized at the UAE's request, focusing on strengthening regional relations and peace.

Lastly, Baqaei mentioned that Iran has not received any new information regarding visas for its delegation attending the annual UN General Assembly meeting in New York.
