Tehran: Emphasizing that zero enrichment is completely unacceptable for Iran, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei says that Iranian negotiators are not allowed to discuss a plan that disregards Iran’s rights to uranium enrichment. In an interview on Tuesday night, Baqaei emphasized that uranium enrichment is a scientific and technological matter for Iran, as this capability is essential for the industrial, medical, and research needs of the Iranian nation.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei addressed the suggestion of establishing a consortium to carry out nuclear activities, stating that Iran would support such a plan; however, this does not mean that the Islamic Republic would abandon enrichment within the country.
Baqaei also discussed Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, highlighting that it has been conducted under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (I.A.E.A.). He criticized a recent I.A.E.A. report on Iran as politically motivated, prepared based on the agendas of Britain, Germany, France, and the United States. The report did not raise any suspicions but suggested Iran could have cooperated more, which Baqaei interpreted as an opportunity for these countries to present an anti-Iran draft resolution.
He further stated that I.A.E.A. Secretary General Rafael Grossi has not played a constructive role, accusing him of aligning with states opposing Iran. Baqaei stressed that Grossi should condemn threats from Israel and the U.S. against Iran, rather than justify them.
Baqaei emphasized Iran’s responsible actions, noting that its nuclear facilities have undergone 493 inspections by the I.A.E.A. out of a total of 682 inspections worldwide. Despite pressures, Iran has remained committed to its peaceful nuclear program, although its scientists have been assassinated and sanctions imposed by the U.N. Security Council.
He reiterated that nuclear weapons have no place in Iran’s military doctrine and criticized Israeli media for spreading false information about Iran’s nuclear activities. Baqaei accused the U.S. and Europe of maintaining regional tensions to support Israel and further their own agendas.
Regarding the Snapback Mechanism, Baqaei accused Europeans of using it as a pressure tool, asserting that Iran has never violated its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (J.C.P.O.A.). He stated that Iran will not concede under this pressure.
Baqaei concluded by announcing the next round of indirect Iran-U.S. talks, scheduled for Sunday, mediated by Oman. He noted the other side’s history of changing stances and statements.
