Iran Proposes New Two-Day Plan for Reopening Strait of Hormuz

Tehran:Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has outlined conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, stating that they are feasible if the United States demonstrates goodwill and a genuine willingness to reach a peaceful solution. The reopening is contingent upon the U.S. meeting Iran's conditions, which were initially part of a seven-day plan discussed during the UN General Assembly in New York.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi mentioned that ongoing discussions with Qatari and Pakistani mediators have led to a revised two-day proposal. This updated plan involves the U.S. taking specific measures on the first day, allowing the Strait of Hormuz to reopen on the second day. These measures are based on the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, with additional requirements due to new developments since its signing.

The conditions set by Iran include lifting new sanctions imposed after the memorandum, reducing the U.S. military presence in the region, lifting the blockade, and implementing planned oil sanctions waivers. Araghchi emphasized that these conditions are not extraordinary and could pave the way for peace and normalize maritime traffic. Following the reopening, Iran and the U.S. would engage in negotiations on mutual interests, such as lifting sanctions and discussing nuclear issues.

Araghchi highlighted a lack of trust as a significant obstacle, citing previous instances of attacks on Iran amid diplomatic efforts. He recalled the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and breaches of agreements by Washington as reasons for Iran's cautious approach to negotiations. Confidence-building proposals are reportedly under consideration to address these trust issues.
