Tehran: A British newspaper has said that despite sustained US military pressure and sanctions against Iran, Tehran has maintained control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz and preserved its regional leverage, leaving US President Donald Trump without a clear path to achieve his stated objectives.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, The Independent argued that Trump's approach has become increasingly inconsistent, noting that repeated declarations of victory have failed to alter the strategic balance. The report states that the US president has announced victory against Iran 32 times, yet Tehran continues to retain control of the Strait of Hormuz while its political system remains intact.
The analysis stated that each time Trump declares victory, Iran uses its strategic advantages to strengthen its position, while renewed US military actions have contributed to market instability, rising oil prices, and increased global inflation, developments that also affect the American economy. 'By surviving and retaining its asymmetrical advantages in drone warfare and geography, the Islamic Republic has defied America and achieved a kind of victory,' The Independent further argued, adding that there's nothing obvious for Trump to do to break this pattern.
It said these factors have enabled the country to withstand pressure from one of the world's most powerful militaries and maintain a degree of strategic advantage. According to the report, Washington lacks a clear strategy to change the current situation, warning that attempts to expand military operations or establish long-term control over the Strait of Hormuz could lead to a prolonged regional conflict, political instability, and a severe global energy crisis.
The newspaper also suggested that 'pressure from the financial markets and domestic politics could force Mr Trump to call off his manoeuvres and return to the negotiating table,' arguing that a negotiated agreement, including on the nuclear issue, remains essential for achieving long-term regional stability.
