Iran Reveals Details of Swiss National’s Jail Suicide

Tehran: Iran's Judiciary spokesman, Asghar Jahangir, has announced that a Swiss national who took his own life while incarcerated in Iran had been arrested for photographing restricted military sites. The individual, originally from Namibia, entered Iran as a tourist in October, traveling in a private car through the Dogharon border crossing, which connects Afghanistan's Herat to Iran's Mashhad.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the Swiss national was apprehended in the military Delta area for taking pictures of prohibited military zones and collaborating with a hostile government. Jahangir provided details on the circumstances surrounding the suicide, explaining that the prisoner had turned off the light in his cell after breakfast and managed to hang himself using a cut curtain from the bathroom in a corner not covered by CCTV cameras. Despite the prompt response by prison staff upon being alerted to the situation, the individual was unable to be revived.

Following the incident, a Swiss embassy delegation, accompanied by a trusted doctor, examined the body and confirmed the suicide. Jahangir mentioned that the body was transferred to a forensic pathologist in Tehran before being handed over to Swiss representatives.
