Geneva: Afsaneh Nadipour, an Iranian career diplomat, was elected on Wednesday as a member of the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Human Rights Council upon a unanimous decision by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. Nadipour is the former Iranian ambassador to Denmark and a senior diplomat of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Ali Bahreini, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, congratulated Afsaneh Nadipour on her election. He highlighted that this is the first time since the establishment of the UN Human Rights Council that a representative from Iran has become a member of the Human Rights Council’s Advisory Committee.

The UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee consists of 18 independent experts from five UN regional groups and functions as the intellectual arm of the Human Rights Council. The committee members are nominated by governments and selected by the Council. The election takes place at the September session of the Council, and the elected members serve for a three-year term, which can be renewed once.
