Iran: Statement by the Spokesperson on Execution Related to 2022 Protests

Brussels: Mehran Bahramian was executed on September 6 by Iranian authorities, after being arrested and sentenced to death in connection with the 2022 protests in Iran. The execution marks a continuation of Iran’s response to domestic dissent through capital punishment.

According to European Union, the current pace of executions in Iran, at least 770 since January 2025, is appalling. The European Union condemns in the strongest terms the use of capital punishment as a response to domestic dissent.

The EU urges the Iranian authorities to immediately end the practice of imposing and carrying out death sentences against protesters. It calls once again on Iran to refrain from any future executions and pursue a consistent policy towards the abolition of capital punishment altogether.
