Tehran: The Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned Britain's ambassador to Tehran to formally protest the British government's decision to designate the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) under the United Kingdom's 'State Threats legislation,' warning that the move 'will be met with a firm and reciprocal response.'

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Hugo Shorter was summoned by Alireza Yousefi, assistant foreign minister and director general for the ministry's Western Europe Department, who conveyed the Islamic Republic's strong protest over the measure. During the meeting, Yousefi criticized remarks made by the British home secretary in parliament against the Islamic Republic, stating that the allegations directed at the IRGC were unfounded.

Yousefi described the accusations as 'an irresponsible act that is inconsistent with the United Kingdom's international obligations and the fundamental principles governing relations between states.' He further highlighted the UK's historical role as a refuge for ringleaders and members of anti-Iranian terrorist groups and networks.

Referring to the IRGC's role in safeguarding Iran's territorial integrity and national security, as well as its efforts in combating terrorism, Yousefi asserted that any hostile legislation targeting the Islamic Republic or attempts to stigmatize its state institutions would 'be met with a firm and reciprocal response from Iran.'
