Iran Summons French Ambassador Over Handling of Student Protests

Tehran:The Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned France's ambassador to Tehran, urging respect for fundamental rights following the French security forces' actions against student protests.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, during the meeting on Tuesday, Hamid Ahmadi, Acting Director General of the Human Rights Department at Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reminded France of its obligations under international human rights treaties. He emphasized the importance of upholding fundamental freedoms, particularly the right to peaceful assembly.

Ahmadi voiced serious concerns about the violence used by French security forces, which reportedly led to injuries and disabilities among protesters, including loss of sight for some individuals, and the arrest of over 5,000 people. He criticized the level of force as unjustifiable for peaceful protests.

Reports and images of security forces entering classrooms and assaulting students and teachers were also highlighted by Ahmadi. He called for an independent investigation into these alleged human rights violations and stressed the need to address accounts of excessive force and the breach of school sanctity by the police.

Additionally, Ahmadi underscored the protesters' demands for the right to education and a fair educational system in France. He urged the French government to respect these lawful rights and ensure accountability for any serious human rights abuses.
