New york: Ambassador and Charg© d'Affaires of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, emphasized the importance of continued international engagement with Afghan officials, asserting that it is essential for promoting stability and addressing Afghanistan's ongoing challenges.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Darzi, speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan, noted the significant reduction in armed conflict and violence across Afghanistan. This relative improvement in the security situation, achieved five years after the current authorities assumed power, represents crucial gains that need to be preserved.

Darzi highlighted the persistent threat of terrorism, noting that groups like ISIS-Khorasan and other extremists continue to pose a serious risk to Afghanistan and its neighbors. He stressed that addressing this threat requires sustained regional cooperation.

The ambassador praised the reduction in opium poppy cultivation as a positive achievement but acknowledged its severe economic impact on Afghan rural communities. He called for sustained investment in alternative livelihoods and rural development to ensure these gains are maintained.

Darzi also expressed concern over Afghanistan's humanitarian and economic situation. With declining external assistance, financial constraints, and additional pressures from the return of Afghan nationals, the country's economy and public services are under significant strain. He advocated for humanitarian assistance to be provided based on need and without political interference.

Iran's longstanding ties with Afghanistan underscore the importance of sustained engagement and cooperation. Despite facing economic pressures, Iran has hosted millions of Afghan nationals, providing them with access to essential services and expanding economic cooperation in various sectors.
