Tehran: Iran's Permanent Mission in Vienna has strongly condemned a recent missile attack by the United States on the Karun nuclear power plant site, currently under construction in Darkhovin. The mission has urged the international community to adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards assaults on safeguarded nuclear facilities used for peaceful purposes.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the Darkhovin nuclear power plant is a significant part of Iran's civilian nuclear energy program, aimed at generating electricity for the national grid. The construction site was targeted by US military forces on Sunday, July 19, 2026. This marks the 18th attack on Iran's safeguarded nuclear facilities since the joint US-Israeli aggression began in June 2025.

In a letter detailing the attack, Iran described the US missile strike as an act of aggression against its scientific and technological advancements. The letter emphasized that such unlawful attacks are clear violations of international law, aimed at undermining Iran's civilian infrastructure due to its resistance to external pressures. The Iranian government criticized the international community's silence and inaction, which they argue embolden aggressors and jeopardize global economic development by eroding trust in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

Iran's Vice President and the Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran have called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Security Council to condemn these attacks and take effective action. They stressed that preventing unlawful attacks on peaceful nuclear installations is a collective global responsibility.

The Islamic Republic of Iran remains committed to defending its national interests and rights, calling for a global zero-tolerance stance against such aggressive actions.
