Iran Urges UN to Condemn Israeli Use of White Phosphorus in Middle East.

New York: Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has called for the international community to explicitly condemn the use of white phosphorus by Israel, labeling it a war crime. In a speech at the UN Security Council meeting concerning “The Middle East Situation: Syria – Chemical Weapons,” Iravani emphasized the need for accountability and international investigation into these actions.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, during the Security Council meeting, Iravani outlined Iran’s position on chemical weapons usage, stressing that as a State Party to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), Iran condemns the use of such weapons by any entity, under any circumstances. He highlighted Iran’s commitment to the objectives of the CWC and underscored the need for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to operate independently and impartially.

Iravani also addressed Syria’s compliance with the CWC, noting that the Syrian government ha
s destroyed its chemical weapons stockpiles and continues to engage constructively with the OPCW. He praised Syria’s efforts in providing documentation and facilitating inspections, advocating for a fair evaluation of Syria’s cooperation to ensure transparency and avoid politicization in the process.

The ambassador expressed grave concerns over the Israeli regime’s use of phosphorus bombs against civilian populations in Gaza and southern Lebanon, actions substantiated by credible reports. He insisted that these acts violate international humanitarian law and urged the UN body to unequivocally condemn them. Iravani called for an international investigation by the OPCW to address these violations and hold those responsible accountable.
