Iran Vows to Pursue Accountability for Perpetrators of Sardasht Chemical Attack

Tehran: Iran has pledged to vigorously pursue accountability for those responsible for the 1987 chemical bombardment of the northwestern Iranian city of Sardasht, calling the attack a lasting symbol of both war crimes and international double standards.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Kazem Gharibabadi, deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, stated that Sardasht was not only a victim of chemical bombs but also a victim of double standards and silence from the international community. He highlighted the involvement of countries, particularly Germany, the US, the UK, and the Netherlands, in arming Saddam Hussein's regime with these weapons and subsequently ignoring the suffering of thousands of victims.

Gharibabadi emphasized Iran's commitment to seriously pursuing the responsibility of the perpetrators of this crime. The attack, carried out by Iraq's air force under former dictator Saddam Hussein, targeted four densely populated areas of Sardasht with chemical bombs on July 28, 1987. It resulted in the death of 110 civilians and exposed about 8,000 others to toxic gases, causing long-term health consequences.
