Tehran: Iran's mission to the United Nations says the United States is manufacturing a false image of 'broad international support' for a draft resolution on the Strait of Hormuz, warning co-sponsors of the resolution against any new escalation. 'It is now crystal clear that the U.S. is seeking to exploit the number of the so-called co-sponsors of its politically motivated and one-sided draft resolution to manufacture a false image of 'broad international support' for its ongoing unlawful actions and to pave the way for further military adventurism in the region,' the mission said on X early Saturday, in response to a draft resolution jointly prepared by the US and several Persian Gulf Arab countries on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. The mission also warned against possible new escalation, holding the countries 'co-sponsoring' the draft resolution responsible. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, 'Should the U.S. trigger any new escalation, all co-sponsoring States will share international resp onsibility alongside Washington for the consequences. No political excuse or diplomatic cover can absolve them of responsibility for facilitating, enabling, and legitimizing U.S. aggression.' On May 5, the US Department of State said in a statement that the United States alongside Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar had drafted a resolution 'to defend freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.' The statement accused Iran of holding 'the world's economy hostage with its efforts to close the Strait of Hormuz, threats to attack ships in the Strait, laying of sea mines that pose a danger to shipping, and attempts to charge tolls for the world's most important waterway.' Iran has strongly dismissed these accusations, saying that any insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider region is directly blamed on the United States and Israel due to the war of aggression they launched on Iran on February 28. Iran, as coastal country of the Strait of Hormuz, has maintained control ov er the waterway since the early days of the war as part of its self-defense measures. The country, at the same time, has been engaged in talks with Oman, which is another coastal country of the Strait of Hormuz, to formulate regulations for free and safe navigation in the waterway. The proposed 20-point resolution is drafted under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which allows for enforcement measures by the Security Council. A previous anti-Iran resolution over the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, which was drafted by Bahrain on behalf of Jordan and Persian Gulf Cooperation Council members except for Oman, was put to a vote at the Security Council in early April, but it was rejected after Russia and China vetoed it.
