Tehran: The Association of Iranian Airlines has raised concerns that ongoing sanctions against Iran's carriers could compromise civil aviation services, emphasizing that air transport should not be subjected to political and economic pressures.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the association emphasized that civil aviation serves as crucial infrastructure and a vital connection between countries, facilitating travel for millions of passengers engaging in tourism, medical care, education, business, and family visits. It argued that imposing restrictions on airlines and aviation supply chains could directly impede access to air transport and compromise operational safety.

The association referenced the Chicago Convention's principles, which advocate for the safe, orderly, and economic progression of international civil aviation and equitable opportunities for international air transport services. It pointed out challenges in acquiring aircraft parts, equipment, and technical services, noting that consistent access to these resources is essential for ensuring flight safety. Despite enduring decades of restrictions, Iranian engineers, pilots, and technicians have continued to support the nation's fleet through domestic expertise and experience.

The association urged the international aviation community, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and member states, to consider the humanitarian, technical, and safety implications of sanctions on Iranian airlines. It also called for enhanced collaboration among domestic aviation companies, airports, maintenance centers, and government bodies to address the current challenges.

This statement follows the US Treasury Department's announcement of sanctions against 36 entities supporting Iran's aviation sector, including 27 Iranian airlines.
